I want my children to remember that no matter how hard your life is right now: Just wait; it is heartbreakingly beautiful and moving

I’ll stick to math, physics, code

Life science nope

Kuphus polythamia, the giant shipworm, is one of the strangest clams. They’re related to “the clams that sunk a thousand ships”, the shipworms, but evolved to live in anoxic sediment such as in wetlands, where they partner with bacteria to make their food from sulfide (other shipworms partner with bacteria to eat the cellulose of wood). They reach 1.5 m (!) in length, living in a long tube of carbonate. #clamFacts https://www.newscientist.com/article/2128009-first-living-example-of-giant-ancient-mollusc-found-in-the-wild/
figure from Distel et al 2017, showing Kuphus up top without its shell. it is a somewhat obscene looking flesh tube of shockingly dark blue-black color, with orangish siphons at the other end. Below is a picture of its long, white tube-shaped shell valve, which looks like a horn a yodeler would use in the Alps. Below is a comparative schematic of Kuphus vs a typical shipworm, showing how Kuphus lives embedded in sediment, feeding hydrogen sulfide to symbiotic microbes in its gills, while the shipworm digs into wood and feeds it to its symbionts.
