While the EPA had just been established, the photographers were tasked with documenting the environmental crisis of the time, capturing the state of pollution across the United States throughout the 1970s. Over 15,000 photographs were taken by nearly 100 photographers, documenting everything from smog-choked cities and water pollution to the daily lives of Americans during the era.
